Mission: Hide and seek
Location: Roanoke
Timeline: Present

On:

{Roanoke base}

As the team started to gather back up there was a lot of head shaking. No survivors were found.

Mira frowned , “Rodale to USS Chuck Norris Any information found by the science department?”

=/\= Montgomery here, the data gathered by the colony on the storms are highly unusual. A lot of magnetic fluctuations and bio signs. A few of the Scientists in the colony speculated that it could be a living storm. =/\=

“Living? Did they speculate that it was sentient as well.” Mira asked.

=/\= Unsure Captain it wasn’t in any of the logs we have gone over so far .=/\=

Trace stiffened at the mention of a living storm, but didn’t say anything as he continued his scans.

“keep going over the data. We aren’t finding any survivors and I don’t want to chance traveling outside of the base. Have you picked up any other life forms?”

=/\= Only the away team. There are a few others but we have been able to track them down as native life forms of the six legged kind. =/\=

Geneva moved up next to Trace, her hand slipping into his. Her breath on his ear did things to his extremities.

“I saw that.” She whispered. “What do you know?”

He grimaced. “Nothing…” He said, then kept talking when she arched an eyebrow. “It’s just…I’ve heard that before. Living Storm. It’s something I read a while back: T’Vor and Henderson writing about the sentient weather patterns caused by a crystalline entity. There are also references all over Earth’s past. Enlil, Wandjina, Chaak…pick your storm deity. Maybe there’s a connection, maybe it’s nothing.”

Geneva nodded. “Maybe, but the Captain needs to know anything we know. Mind if I tell her?”

Trace nodded, “Go ahead.”

Geneva conveyed what Trace had told her to Mira.

They made quick progress on the next few decks. Mostly family quarters so far nothing living in the 12 decks. Standing in Central command She looked around. “18 levels more to cover. These should be mostly labs, rec center and offices. Let’s get to it I do not what to be here when that storm gets here.”

“You think the storm is sentient?” Kevin asked Mira on their private channel.

“There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio,” Mira recited.

“Huh?”

“It’s a possibility is all,” she continued, “Does it sound crazy?”

“No,” Kevin answered, “It explains a lot. I didn’t find anything wrong with the shuttle. It was almost like the storm was fighting us.”

“Like it was trying to keep us here or keep us away from here?” she asked as she bit her lip thinking of plans and discarding them just as quickly. “that Subterranean city had a carving, one I oddly recognized as ‘Ascend.”

She stood there while her hand still in Kevin’s then a blur appeared on the other side of the room. She watched it move closer to her but before Mira could think much about anything Kevin pulled her out of the way and gave orders to step aside.

Her eyes widened as It passed the spot she had been standing in. “probably best not to find out what contact would do.” She gave Kevin a smile.

K’ner stepped along ‘behind’ it, although she couldn’t be quite sure what was front and back, or even if “it” had such traits, but for now she was going by its direction of travel. She kept her eyes on it and watching the scan data scroll by on the side of her HUD.

The anomaly flickered In and out, then disappeared. K’ner got that studied look as she looked around, knowing everyone recognized what would otherwise be a distant gaze as her sharing between what she saw, and the data scrolling that only she could see.

Turning slightly she walked the rest of the way to the lift, watching the others gather to move to the next level. As she stood next to the doors waiting for them to load up, she palmed another monitor and touched it to the frame, letting it self-adhere and then fell in with the rest.

They had covered a few more levels still nothing. The daycare center had hit her hard.

“What’s our working theory on what happened to the crew?” Kevin asked Mira.

Thanks to being in the crazy Matrix and her symbiont, Mira had a few life times of knowledge to fall back on.

She looked up at Kevin “I know you don’t remember being in the Matrix. But there was a desert world it was harsh and unforgiving. Above ground was not really livable so they lived underground in huge compounds . The people had a religious belief that they could Ascend to a different realm. But of course.” She looked down at her PADD “this carving could have meant the cold wasteland above them when they talked about Ascending.“

She gave a little pout as she thought what had that stone carving meant?

These Environmental suits were annoying. Her fingertips wanted to rub her forehead and she couldn’t. She forced her mind to get back to working on this problem.

“what if the people that lived below ascended into energy of some kind? But if that happened then why was the colony missing?” she looked out a view port at the storm. “Unless they Ascended them as well?” a different realm or the freedom to travel as energy? Either one was bad so we’re they dealing with an energy God? Or what?
