Mission:
Death before dishonor
Location: Starbase 364
Timeline: Current
On:
{Arena, Klingon Lower Decks}
Kevin took his place opposite Klvll in the center of the arena. He gave the Klingon a ceremonial salute with his blade. It wasn’t customary in a Klingon duel and certainly Klvll wasn’t worthy of such consideration but the human tradition was strong within Kevin.
Klvll was startled by the salute and sudden florish as were many of the Klingons in attendance, though the marshal seemed unperturbed. Perhaps he was well versed in human dueling traditions, Kevin thought as he took up a fencers stance with one arm tucked behind his back.
With the two opponents set on their marks, the marshal shouted, “Lay on!” before retreating from the arena with more dignity than was necessary.
As Kevin had expected, Klvll’s first attack was a series of slashing two-handed swings of the bat’leth with his full strength, intended to end the combat quickly. Kevin deftly dodged the arcing blade by giving ground as he kept the kur’leth in a low guard position. He kept count of his steps, visualizing how far he had to the edge of the arena.
Klvll was surprised at Kevin’s retreat, having expected to clash steel against steel. He altered his stance to thrust with the bat’leth, putting his full weight behind his blade as he extended his reach. Kevin parried the series of jabs but did not attack in return.
As they watched the fight progress, K’lar placed his hand on top of Mira’s clenched fist. “You have every right to be mad. He mocked you as a mate, lover and the leader of your House. The last time I saw the both of you at the Admiral’s party. He looked like he very much loved you. What changed?” K’lar asked in a lowered voice only Awal and herself could of heard him.
“His woman and child showed up. I couldn’t watch the reunion and not fall apart. My life was disintegrating before my eyes. So I left. I had to clear my head before I could deal with anything more. Kevin wanted to talk. I told him no not right now. If I didn’t work off some of that anger I couldn’t….”
Klvll switched to an overhead strike but Kevin’s blade deflected it downward trajectory as he spun away and around to his opponent’s back side. He had a perfect opening for a thrust but instead chose a flick to Klvll’s calf as Kevin retreated out of reach.
K’lar nodded “The red rage had to pass before there could be talk. Smart. Then what happened?”
Mira bit her lip. “I got kidnapped by a Trill Ambassador wanting me to be the host for his dying wife’s symbiont.”
K’lar stiffened “Son of a targ. Are you ok? You shouldn’t even be up right now.”
Mira shook her head no, “They didn’t find out about my symbiont and didn’t have time to do much of anything. My ship’s doctor and her team came and got me.”
K’lar nodded. “We will file charges. Does Kevin know about it?”
She gave a little shrug. “That would depend on if he ever came back to the ship last night. He sure didn’t seem happy to see me. Why bother to show up? Clearly, he thinks I am unworthy as a mate, a leader and a warrior.” She sighed. There wasn’t anything else left of her.
Klvll closed on Kevin once again swinging wildly but the human parried the lows or danced maddeningly away from him. “Fight me you Pet’Q!” Klvll belowed
K’lar frowned as he listened to Mira, wondering what to say. His eyes scanned the room oddly Terek Klingjil was not there. That meant he was up to no good.
Awal leaned in to whisper. “He planned to keep you on the ship for your safety. We didn’t think you would wake up yet.”
Mira raises an eyebrow. No wonder why K’ner was surprised to see her awake. Her eyes meet Chek. She had even more reason to thank him and his mate. Mira nodded but that Awal told her even made her more angry. Well anger was better then hurt. Kevin truly thought she had no right to be here.
Kevin continued to counter Klvll’s attacks, occasionally making a shallow, flickering strike that left a small streak of blood but did little else to injure the hulking Klingon.
K’lar frowned “You were planning on using this fight to burn out your anger?”
Mira gave a nod.
“Since he doesn’t want you, here come back to my ship with me. Visit your cousin and nephews or use my holodeck first then visit. I know the family would love to see you and the kids.”
Mira nodded but said nothing as she watched the fight.
Klvll was starting to tire. He had thrown all his effort into striking first with as much force as possible. Kevin, on the other hand, had conserved his energy only striking when Klvll was out of position with cuts that were more precise than forceful. Klvll had intended to win a sprint but Kevin was determined to make it a marathon.
The on looking Klingons expressed their dismay at Kevin continuing to give ground, demanding that he stand and fight like a warrior. If the Star Fleet officer heard their taunts, he gave no sign of it as he was focused in on his opponent.
But even the best defense is prone to error. Klvll feint another double handed swing before making a risky switch to a one-handed thrust. The maneuver caught Kevin off-guard and the tip of the bat-leth cut through the vambrace on his left forearm, leaving a streak of red that spread outward.
The Klingons gave a cheer.
Mira’s eyes widened. “if he hadn’t changed the rules I would Klvll’s right now.” She bit her lip trying to figure out what Kevin strategy was.
Ambassador Dalar Lugir raises an eyebrow as he lean forward . “I doesn’t look like your mate is very good at protecting you.”
Mira said nothing as Klvll, encouraged by his strike on Kevin, renewed his double handed assault. Kevin remained undeterred by the cut on his forearm, continuing to parry the larger male’s blows with mechanical precision.
Dalar continued “Perhaps this is an easy way to divorce you and say oh I tried.”
K’lar growled “shut up Dalar. She doesn’t need to hear what might not be true. “
Dalar shrugged “I am thinking the kids will be safer on your ship K’lar.” Dalar patted his jacket “I will protect her from Klvll.”
K’lar grunted not looking confident but stiffened has his hand went to his ear. “Seems there was an attack Shan’nar. Well now we know what Terek was up to. I am having all the kids, Vaytoc and your little blue nanny sent to my ship.”
Mira nodded in agreement but her attention was on the fight.
Klvll attempted his feint-thrust combination again but Kevin was ready for it this time. He parried the thrust and spun to the inside, bringing his left elbow upward, forcibly connecting with the Klingon’s nose. There was a loud crunch before blood began to run freely down Klvll’s face.
Unable to force his bat’leth passed Kevin’s blade with a single hand, Klvll tried to grab the human by the neck but his quarry ducked beneath his grasp and rolled away.
Klvll wiped the blood away from his face and advanced on Kevin. He swung and Kevin parried again but instead of retreating, Kevin riposted with a thrust that the Klingon only narrowly dodge. Instead, the kur’leth blade sliced through the Klingon’s arm guard leaving a deep cut on his arm.
Awal sitting up with Mira his face contours the smell of blood hitting his nostrils the thrill of the fight makes his muscles flex.
K’lar leans into her “kids are safe. Montgomery wasn’t too happy until he got down to game plan 12. He sent two of the haz team and chin .” he watched her carefully “what’s with needing a little human male? And you have that many game plans?
Mira raised an eyebrow looking away from the battle for a second to look at him “he has excelled in martial arts. I am very proud of my protégé. He has gotten really good. I gave him 25 pre-approved plans.”
Then her focus was on the fight. Most of the Klingons were in a blood lust. “check the air filtering system. They shouldn’t be this…. Blood thirsty.”
{ USS Conqueror… }
K’ner spoke quietly as the group moved into the room. “Stay with them Chin but get connected. Use the code Korra gave you.”
Vaytoc growled, crowding the cubs protectively, his tail lashing side to side.
K’ner nodded at him as she stopped at the door, looking over at Deena. “Keep him calm if you can, he knows the Captain’s moods and right now it looks like it’s not good. I don’t think anyone will try anything on K’lar’s ship, but take no chances.”
Deena didn’t bother to look back, as she was already scanning the room as Zimia made the kids comfortable, still trying to explain the impromptu trip.
Letting the door close, K’ner put her back to the wall next to it and watched the corridor. The overly-large, even for a Klingon warrior that had opened the door, leaned closer with a scarred grimace. “No harm will come to the tender skins. I am K’lar Elite Guard. I have never failed!”
K’ner turned casually, keying her face shield to retract. Looking up, her expression was neither fierce, nor nervous. “And yet I kicked your kundingy in our session last month…” She casually looked back along the corridor, letting her gaze scan the ceiling plates too as the Klingon sucked in his breath.
He reached out and slugged the Flaxian as his laughter echoed loudly. Enough that another Klingon looked around the corner at the end to see what was going on.
K’ner’s suit and upper body absorbed some of the blow, and some of the kinetic energy she took leaning with it to the side, but her feet never moved and she returned to her normal upright position as the Klingon’s laughter died down and he assumed the same position on the other side. “Wait until next time. I’ll wear a cup!”
K’ner smiled, ever-so-slightly and snapped up her face shield. Her Dots were all in place, even Billingsly this time. Now they did what they did most of the time… waited. The fight streamed across in a small vid from Nod’s tri-cam.
{Arena, Klingon Lower Decks}
Frustrated at his inability to land another blow, Klvll threw his bat’leth at Kevin who hurriedly raised his guard to ward off the blade. Taking advantage of the distraction, Klvll closed and landed a punch on Kevin’s jaw. Kevin returned the blow with a punch from the kur’leth’s guard to Klvll’s face that caused him to stagger back. Kevin tossed his own blade aside and advanced on the Klingon.
Mira raised an eyebrow. You never toss down your weapon! By all that was holy.
K’lar leaned into Mira again “it’s time I get you out of here. Security lost Terek.”
Mira cursed “I can’t leave they will think I have run. That I think Kevin will fail. Plus it might distract Kevin in the fight.”
“I hate to tell you this but you are too small for him to see if you are still here or not. Plus he didn’t want you here.” K’lar told her.
Klvll threw another series of punches at Kevin, who blocked and deflected the assault before shoving Klvll backwards. Klvll retreated to regain his footing drew out his d’k tang. He swung his blade in a flat, wide arc causing Kevin to give ground, then slashed downward followed by a cut to the side. Kevin grabbed the blade arm and brought his knee up to ram it into Klvll’s unprotected side then punched him in the face. Klvll threw his weight at Kevin, forcing another retreat, while he swung wildly with the d’k tang.
After an overextended thrust by Klvll, Kevin chopped at his opponent’s wrist, causing the Klingon to drop his blade. Then Kevin grabbed Klvll’s injured arm and flipped him over to land on his back. Kevin stomped his boot down on the Klingon’s head but missed as Klvll rolled away and lumbered to his feet.
Kevin went for the dropped d’k tang only to be grabbed from behind in a choke hold. He tensed his neck muscles and resisted the urge to grab Klvll’s hands, reaching instead for the Klingon’s eyes. Searching with his thumbs, he found the eye sockets and began applying pressure. He felt a pop and Klvll bellowed in pain. As his grip on Kevin slackened, Kevin drove his foot into Klvll’s knee.
Klvll dropped to the ground, clutching at his eye. Kevin staggered to the d’k tang and picked it up before turning back to Klvll. Somehow, the Klingon had risen to his feet. He swayed, blood coursing down his cheek and chin in dark ribbons. His breath came ragged and furious, the low growl of a warrior refusing to fall.
Kevin tightened his grip on the d’k tang. For a heartbeat, the two stood motionless—driven by vengeance and sheer will—before Klvll lurched forward with a hoarse battle cry. Kevin met the charge head-on, stepping inside the attack and slashing once, cleanly, across Klvll’s neck.
The Klingon jerked to a halt, momentum faltering as he dropped to one knee. Kevin didn’t wait. He wrenched the d’k tang free, pivoted, and struck again—this time with a downward cut that sent Klvll sprawling flat onto the ground. The fight drained out of the Klingon in a single shuddering exhale.
Kevin stood over him, chest heaving, bruised and bleeding. “Do you yield?” Kevin asked in a low, determined tone.
Clutching his ruined eye, Klvll forced himself to an upright position and roared, “I will never yield! As long as I draw breath, the battle is not finished!”
“So be it,” Kevin replied coldly before driving the d’k tang through Klvll’s throat. The narrow line of blood from the earlier slice turned to a torrent as the blade opened the carotid artery. Blood spilled out and onto Kevin’s hand and chest. Klvll grabbed at Kevin and pulled him close. “This is not over,” he gurgled as the life left his body.
“It is for you,” Kevin said as he detached the dead man’s hand from his shoulder.
Mira slump in her seat she hadn’t realized she had been holding her breath. He made it!
“This isn’t over they are going to be furious and you’re an easy target.” K’lar waved his hand to have to her security guards and a group of his star fleet officers from the USS Conqueror to get her to his ship.
Mira stood quickly then moved with the officers. Everyone was on there feet yelling. Half in anger and half in victory. She had wanted to run up and hug Kevin but he didn’t want her here.
She let her security team take her to K’lar ship. The Federation star ship was probably the most secure place to be and she needed her cousin.
