Trace read the reports from the Starbase Engineering Team, but he only took in about every other paragraph. His thoughts had been dominated by Thorne, and he didn't like that. In the last day or three since being separated from her, he had started to feel like the intense feelings of connectedness he had for her were a weakness, and he couldn't have that. Staying the course was the right thing to do...for both of them, he thought.
Starbase Engineering was much different than Starship Engineering, not bad per se, just different. On the ship, the entire scope of engineering was his responsibility, whereas on the base, the Engineering Department was much bigger and had much more to worry about...everything from maintaining geosynchronous orbit to weapons to life support. And the scope...it required multiple departments, which was why his department was focused on maintenance and weapons.
He had just finished reading the reports of all the maintenance activity when he decided it was time to head for bed.
[Science]
Geneva read the reports from her department in Science on the Starbase, but she was only paying attention to half of it, her attention occupied by Trace. Thankfully, she was only an assistant CSO, and of only one department. Like engineering, the Starbase Science department was huge, and she found being able to focus in on her area of expertise - Xenobiology - was soothing.
Her thoughts wandered again to the Chief Engineer. She knew that taking a break from each other was the right thing to do, but now that they had been apart for a couple of days, she couldn't think of anything else. Would this pass? Would she not think as much about him in a week? Was she falling in love with him?
With a sigh, she discarded the padd and decided to call it a night.
"Ensign," a voice called, "Do you have time to review this report I've been working on?"
Chilar, a tall Risan smiled at her. He'd been flirting with her, she knew, but she wasn't interested. "Maybe tomorrow." She said, "I'm ready to turn in."
"It'll just take a moment, and I can follow you to your quarters if that sweetens the deal...not like that." He said, blushing.
"Suit yourself." She said, but you won't have long. I fall asleep pretty quickly.
[Corridor]
Trace rounded the corner toward his quarters and heard Geneva's voice before he saw her, and waited. He didn't think he could bear seeing her just now so he'd wait until she entered her quarters before he went to his.
He heard a male voice, and froze. What the hell? He gave in to his curiosity and peeked around the corner. She saw her with a tall man with a statuesque physique, and who was twenty years his junior. Instinctively, he sucked in his gut. The two of them disappeared into her quarters, but not before Geneva gave a long look toward Trace's door.
