Mira was lying down by the fire and looking up at the stars. The air had turned colder the further they went north. As she breathed, she saw her breath mingling with the cold air. The moon was full, and there didn't seem to be a cloud in the sky.
She was worried about how to get the scientists out of the city and back to the ship. Mostly, she was worried about Kevin bringing a team into that city.
Was this why captains pulled away from the crew? It wouldn't work for her. She was already a part of the crew. Being XO, she was the one everyone had come to.
Kevin walked into the circle of the firelight from checking the perimeter and laid down next to Mira. "Everthing is secure. Annvel's people are back inside their settlement. I've set up a guard rotation and we are set to move out in the morning.
He stared up at the brightly lit moon. "I was hoping for a waning half moon so we would have the advantage of darkness but at least we will be able to see where we are going."
Mira rolled over to look at him and smiled. "That is a bright side to it. Annvel's people had a lot to say about Grendaas. None of it was good. I think he will react poorly to having the scientists taken from him. We might need a fallback team willing to deal with anything going after the group leaving the city. Snippers mostly. Also, whoever goes in will know the layout of the city. If you're really going to do the recon, then you should lead the team. I'll lead the team to make sure you're not followed out." There she said it. She wasn't at all happy about it, but it was the truth and the best plan she could come up with. She had gone this far might as well tell him the rest.
" There is something else, I am not sure how to tell you or even if this is the right time to tell you. There just has never been a right time to bring something like this up." She rested her weight on her elbows as she laid on her stomach.
"My cousin sent me photos of Kolar..." she bit her lip and looked away for a moment. "We haven't run the DNA again, but.....He has light blue eyes, and his hair is coming in blonde. I wasn't trying to hide it. It just seems too unreal to be true."
Kevin's mind had been so engaged in conceiving possible courses of action for finding and rescuing the scientists given the scant information they currently had on the Grendaas stronghold, that he almost missed Mira's comment about Kolar.
Kevin looked at Mira thoughtfully. He hadn't been aware of the fact that she had been keeping in touch with her cousin about her DNA "child". When first presented with the child several months ago, she had denied any maternal feelings towards the baby that was the outcome of the union between a female Q and Ensign Rodriguez. The Q had transformed herself to look like Mira and used her DNA in a mad cap attempt to create a Q-human hybrid. Rodriguez had claimed, long and loudly, that he had thought that it was a dream. It was still a sore point between Kevin and the Ensign.
Perhaps time was softening her opinion of the child. She had lost a baby to the Orions and naming this child after her dead Klingon mate was telling. But he failed to see the significance of her comment or why she felt the need to justify not telling him.
"Like you, Ensign Rodriguez has dark hair and eyes," he observed, "but he might have recessive genes for hair and eyes." He wasn't quite sure where this conversation was going.
Mira nodded. "I guess that's true. It's just that he had my dark blue eyes and Auburn hair. Then overnight, he started...... changing. I wish I had my PADD I would show you." she smiled solfy."He is crawling and getting into everything. " She laughed and rolled over to look at the stars."I keep telling myself that sending him to live with my cousin was the best for him. The ship wasn't a place to raise a baby, then Kronnelti got married, and their are having a baby. " she shook her head at the chain of advents.
"That is odd," Kevin admitted, "but I know almost nothing about babies so who knows. I had the same concerns when I heard that Dianna was pregnant. The Chuck Norris is no place for a child. But being home stationed at Starbase 364 changes things. Are you considering reuniting with Kolar? As Captain and XO we have 50 'kids' already," Fifty was exactly the crew complement of the Norris less Mira and Kevin.
Mira laughed. "We do have 50 kids together. Some are more trouble than others." She was quiet for a moment. "Kolar was the hardest decision I had to make. I was angry at Rodriguez for making this situation happen in the first place. Kolar is a beautiful baby. I am not sure what would be the best for him." her hand took his needing the connection.
Kevin returned her grip with equal pressure. A thought occurred to him at that moment, "Kolar is half Trill and half Human, right? And your cousin lives amongst Klingons. Isn't Kolar's situation going to be a little bit like yours growing up as a Trill amongst Caitians?" He regretted the question as soon as he asked it. It was a sensitive topic and Kevin hoped that he hadn't pushed too hard.
Mira's hand tightened on Kevin's as she rolled over to look at him. "Oh crap. I hadn't thought of that. I was just thinking he would have a loving mom, a great dad, and siblings." She bit her lip, rethinking her decision. "My cousin told me her oldest son got in a fight at school because the boy told him his mother had a smooth forehead. To the Klingon that's a curse." Maybe she was going to have to rethink this whole situation.
"I know that your cousin and her mate will treat Kolar much better than M'Niras treated you but children, even siblings, are cruel." Memories of his own childhood sprang to mind unbidden. "Whatever you do," he reassured her, "It will be for the best."
Mira nodded, settling next to him. Relaxing a little more. Perhaps a nanny would work. Kolar had one right now. The woman was older and lost her mate. Perhaps something like that would work for her on the base, but right now, they had to get the scientists back and off this world.
Yeah, one problem at a time. "Ok, I'll contact Kiara when we get back to the ship." She snuggles next to him, "he really does look like you, " she yawned.
Kevin's eyes shot open. He really does look like me, he thought in confusion, what the Void does that mean? It was going to be a sleepless night.
