Mission:
Thunderdome
Location: USS Chuck Norris
Timeline: Current
on:
{Mess Hall, Deck 2}
“The mission is a covert search and rescue. Our target is a five-person science team that has gone silent,” Kevin was briefing the assembled crewmembers that would compose the search and rescue party, “The team had a long established base of operation on the planet Paarth Elion Three and had previously never missed a routine communication. We are hoping to find that the team’s communication gear has merely malfunctioned but are preparing for the possibility that they have been abducted or have otherwise gone missing.”
“Paarth Elion Three had a developing pre-warp culture that was on the verge of space travel when the planet was struck by an environmental disaster two decades ago that killed almost 90% of the dominate sentient species. The sudden decline in population was accompanied by a complete breakdown of social structures and well as a sharp drop in agriculture. Major population centers were no longer sustainable and the remaining sentients are regressing into barbarism."
"Society has devolved from a relatively egalitarian patriarchy to a 'survival of the fittest' where the strong rule and subjugate the weak. Slavery has become commonplace and most advances towards sexual equality has dissipated. There are a few places where females hold power but the planet has been described as a place where 'men rule'."
“As a pre-warp culture that has had no previous contact with alien races, the planet is under Prime Directive restrictions. You have all begun gene therapy to convert your appearance to match that of the dominate sentient species and will have two more days of treatment before the Norris departs. This team will only be allowed to take equipment that is currently in use on the planet or reasonable similar variations. The main projectile weapon in use are black powder pistols and muskets and there are a wide variety of short and long-bladed weapons and clubs. Regrettable, there are no curved weapons so the bat’leths will need to remain aboard ship.”
Trace nodded, not liking what he was hearing but not having anything to add. He thought that the mechanics of these kind of weapons would be within his grasp, but he had three days to study up on internal combustion engines.
Kronnelti did not like that he had to undergo gene therapy, the Dr told him the same thing they told Mira it's meant for humans so they had to splice his DNA so it could work.
They put the needle in his arm and started, he laid there all different feelings came to him then nausea then calmness.
Once done he went back to see Dianna but was that a good idea? Probably not as spike would defend her, so instead he goes off to the holodeck and starts training in hand to hand combat.
Seeing as there were no question, Kevin continued his briefing and displayed a schematic of the science station on the planet, "The science team has disguised themselves as a small farming commune outside of a medium sized settlement. The seven scientists employ a number of native sentients to work the farm and maintain their cover. We will initially beam down at night several kilometers away and approach on foot in daylight. Our cover story will be that we are a band of merchants from the south who were attacked by the second sentient species," an image of the green, four-armed insectoid race flashed onto the monitor, "and had our vehicles and most of our equipment confiscated."
"Those without a gift for languages," Kevin raised his own hand, "were offered to have a subdural implant that will allow you to understand the local languages and assist you in replying in the same, although I am told that it will be with a horrible accent. That should, however, support our claim of being 'from the south'."
"We will attempt to contact the science team, assuming that they are still at the farm, and extract them from there. If they are missing, our mission will be to find and recover them."
"The Norris will need to hide in the shadow of the planet to avoid sunlight from reflecting off of the ship's surface and being noticed by the Paarthians. That will mean that the only time that we will be able to beam back to the ship is when we are at the farm at night."
Kevin looked around the briefing room, "Are there any questions?"
Geneva raised her hand. "What do we know about the scientific advancement of the Paarthians prior to their sociological breakdown?" She asked. Trace had tried to talk her out of going, knowing how dangerous it could be, but she wasn't to be dissuaded.
"The primary sentient species on the planet had achieved a technology equivalent to mid- to late-twentieth century Earth but was slightly behind that in some of the more mechanical sciences. They had only just become capable of launching primitive satellites for instance. The secondary species, designated Elionians, had not developed much beyond eighteenth-century technology but their society was much more resilient in the aftermath of the catastrophe."
Geneva had decided to go, and though ostensibly she was going because she knew she could add value, she also wanted to be by Trace's side during this mission. She couldn't say why, and she'd die before telling him as much, but there it was. What was she thinking?
Mira sat back and watched Kevin give the mission brief. He seemed to be very confident in his new duties. The worst of her being sick was passing, but she felt tired. The doctors had promised that would pass also.
Vaytoc, on the other hand, was happy and took the gene therapy very well, and had almost completed his treatment. "I suggest you all spend some time in the holodeck with the blades. It could mean the difference of life and death. there are holos of how they fight. I want all of us to come home."
T'Pralik was nervously fidgeting on her small stool. She could swear she was feeling nauseous and thought she might puke soon. She was also fairly certain that her heart rate was higher than it should be. She had never like the physical medicines, and had made a high pitched squeak earlier when she discovered she would be poked with a needle.
"Unless there are other questions," Kevin concluded, "you have your orders. We have two days to finish gene therapy and practice primitive weapon skills. After that, we are on our way to Paarth Elion Three."
