{Main Infirmary, Deep Space Nine}
Michael opened his eyes. Slowly at first. The bright lights of the infirmary hurt. Gradually, and with each painful blink, he grew accustomed to the brightness. He lifted himself up from the bio-bed and sat up. It felt like every muscle in his body ached, from his head down to his toes. He rubbed his face and tried to remember how he got here.
“Good, you’re awake.” Came a familiar voice from across the room.
Michael turned to see the smiling face of Julian Bashir. “Julian? What are you doing on the Chuck Norris?”
The doctor began scanning the Captain with a medical tricorder. Every inch of the man would need to be carefully scanned to ensure no lingering after effects of what he’d been through. “I’m not on the Chuck Norris, Captain. You’re on Deep Space Nine.”
Michael frowned and held his head in his hands. His memory was like Swiss cheese, and he couldn’t remember much of anything. He looked to his right and saw something unbelievable. On the bio-bed next to him was… him. His own double! “Julian..?”
“Ah yes, our friend here is heavily sedated. I brought him here myself.” The doctor explained. “I’m not entirely sure how, but it appears as though he’s taken your place on the Chuck Norris for the last few months.”
“Who is it?” Michael asked. “What is it?” He paused for a moment. “And what do you mean ‘last few months’?”
Julian closed the medical tricorder and gave his full attention to the clearly disorientated Captain. “According to DNA samples, I believe that the person lying on that bed is a Zaj modified to look like you. Sometime around the time that they attacked this station, you were taken and replaced. A partially destroyed Zaj scout ship was found a few clicks from here by a Cardassian trade ship a couple of days ago. Evidentially they found your cryo-stasis pod onboard, still functioning, and dropped you off here. I thought it prudent to disable your doppelgänger first before awakening you. I’ve just finished informing Colonel Kira, who is now informing Starfleet Command of the situation.”
Michael sat there and took all of the information in as best as he could. “So for the past few months, that thing has been commanding my ship, leading my crew?”
“And probably transmitting secrets and intelligence back to the Zaj.” Julian added.
The Captain tried to get to his feet, but felt dizzy. Julian moved quickly to anchor the man by his arm. “Captain, take it easy for a few hours. You’ve been in cryo-statis for almost 3 months. It’s going to take a little bit of time for your neural pathways to reactivate. I’m actually surprised that you’re this active this early to be honest.”
“Let Rodale know what has happened.” Michael pointed, as he lay back down onto the biobed, his eyes closing. “Tell her… tell her I’ll be back on my feet… in no… time…”
