{Bridge}

Kevin surveyed the damage to the Avenger. It was as if the ship were a cookie and a child had taken a big bite from one of the quadrants. The starboard side warp nacelle was missing as well as a good portion of the starboard rear saucer section. He marveled at the crew’s ability to have secured the loss of life support integrity against such damage.

Scans of the damaged area indicated a high level of polaric ions consistent with the use in a weapon. Levels of ion dissipated in an inverse proportion to the distance from the damage further confirming the weapon hypothesis.

The evidence collected made Kevin nervous. With the interference of the nebula, shields were ineffective and he doubted that the ship’s ablative armor would be sufficient to fully protect it from a weapon employing polaric ion energy. The best defense would be to avoid being hit in the first place. He would redouble his efforts to find the Romulan ship.

{IRW Shira}

The Shira was closing on her prey. Months had been invested in the covert mission to cross the sphere of influence exerted by the races of the alliance against Romulus. The war against Earth and her allies, the Vulcans, Andorians and Tellerites was not going well, but there was great hope that the polaric ion energy weapon could turn the tide.

“Commander,” one of the bridge officers called out, “we have contact with a ship of unknown origin.”

“Onscreen,” Commander Reah’la ordered.

The ship was a curious design, a bit like the boom section of a Klingon cruiser but larger with a much wider fore section and fins on the aft, rather like the tail of a fish. “IS it a Klingon ship?”

“No,” her science officer replied, “the energy signatures do not match any Klingon configuration.”

The alien ship approached the Shira several points off of her beam but gave no indication of detecting the cloaked ship. Reah’la wondered what race was manning the ship and how they might figure into the dynamics of the Romulan-Earth conflict. She decided against contacting the aliens, however, as she had a mission to complete first.

“Give the alien ship a wide berth,” she ordered, “and continue to look for the Avenger.”

It wouldn’t be long now.
