Mission: The Avenger
Location: Rolar Nebula
Timeline: Current

{IRW Shira Bridge}

“Commander, we have located the Avenger but there is a problem”

Reah’la didn’t like problems, “Explain!”

“There is a second ship, approximately one-third the size of the Avenger in close-proximity,” the science officer replied, “The vessel is of an unknown design.”

Three unidentifiable vessels went beyond coincidence. There was something else in play here. “Onscreen,” the Commander snapped.

The starfield was replaced with a magnified view of the second ship. It possessed an oblong shape with a rectangular extension, rather like a neck, and two warp nacelles nestled close to what was presumably the ship’s main section. It looked rather like her own warbird. “Is it a Romulan ship?” she asked hopefully.

“Uncertain,” the science officer answered, “the energy signature matches more closely to Federation technology. And there is this.” The viewscreen further focused in on the top of the ship’s oblong body. There were characters foreign to the Commander’s eyes but she recognized the Earth letters denoting the acronym for United Space Ship.

“What is the name of the ship?” she asked.

“The computer is translating it as Chuck Norris,” the science officer announced.

Immediately, Reah’la’s copper-based blood turned to ice. The human’s prowess was legendary amongst the members of the Imperial Romulan Command. Any ship bearing his name would be formidable indeed. She needed to strike while she had the element of surprise. The damage assessments from their previous attack indicated that another direct hit from the polaric ion infused plasma weapon would destroy Avenger. If they were quick, they could decloak, fire and recloak before the Chuck Norris could fire back.

“Navigation” Reah’la ordered, “plot a vector to attack Avenger. Weapons, begin charging the plasma projector with polaric ions.”

The crew acknowledged her orders and Reah’la sat back in her command chair with a satisfied expression. The kill would soon be hers.

{IRW Shira Engineering Deck}

The ions in the polaric energy generator deep in the heart of the IRW Shira awoke from their slumber by the ship’s computer. The gateway keeping them within the generator was opened and they spilled out along the conductive conduits towards the plasma generators at the front of the ship. Most proceeded to their ordered destination without incident but a few of the lazier ions, following the path of least resistance found a gap in the conduit’s insulating layers. The gap was a hither to undiscovered consequence of the damage suffered in the earlier skirmish with USS Avenger, and the polaric ion, lacking anything better to do, spilled harmlessly into space outside of the ship.

The klaxon at the science console rang out. “Commander! We’ve detected a spike in polaric energy,” the science officer shouted as she turned the klaxon off.

Mira spun around in the Captain's chair, “Where?”

“Bearing 037, Mark 83, twelve thousand kilometers!”

Kevin marked the plot on his navigation display

“Tactical, can you get a weapons lock?”

“Negative,” Kronnelti replied.

“Onscreen,” Miira ordered. The starfield altered slightly but nothing else was visible against the black backdrop. Then a shimmer began to appear. “I think that the Romulans are decloaking, Commander!”
