Mira looked into the mirror to make sure she stilled looked good for Kevin. With a little nod, satisfied with her looks she picked up the bouquet turned to leave her room.
Zimia frowned, “Why are you so nervous? You do want to do this right?”
Mira sighed , “Of course it’s just that while Kevin and I were married in the Matrix. This is my first marriage in the ……. Real world.“
“Wait I thought you and Kolar were married.”
Mira frowned, “No. We did try to get married 3 times but each time something happened and we couldn’t. I was mated. With Klingons its more of a claiming not a marriage and I keep thinking something will happen to stop this marriage now.“ She gave Zimia a sad little smile before taking Kolar’s hand. “Ready to be my man of honor?”
He gave her a pensive smile as they walked out the door and down the path to where they were to meet.
“Mama I don’t want to give you away. Can’t I keep you?” Kolar asked her.
So that is why he was being so quite Mira thought.
"Sweetie your not giving me away. I am your mom and daddy is your dad. You are walking me to dada so I’ll be safe. All you need to do is say hi to daddy then hold my flowers while daddy gives me a ring and I give him his ring and this sword that is all we are doing.“ That seemed to satisfy his worry and all he needed to hear because he got happy.
It had taken longer then Mira would have liked but they had made a Kur’leth for her house. The Kur’leth was very similar to the mek’leths she loved to use but more like a sword , Kevin might grow comfortable with. It had three symbols carved into the top park right under the handle. One was the Rasmehlier house crest, then star fleet emblem right next to each other. The third was a Trill symbol of love. Down the blade were Viking blessings and protection. It really was a work of art and would be past down to Kolar when he got married . She wasn’t sure how much of Thor’s list had been given to Kevin so she had done most of the things on the list herself. That hand fasting rope was tucked into the white fur coat she had on.
Seeing there was so many people waiting made her nervous. What happened to it just being her crew and family? Darn it looked like the whole Viking camp had turned out. Of course they never miss a reason to party. The bride's side overflowed with Thor's family and friend, spilling into the rear benches on the groom's side. The rest of the benches on that side were empty except for three Star Fleet officers seated behind the first bench. The were all around Kevin's age and were likely Academy classemates.
Her eyes looked over Kevin and she gave him a soft smile.
He looked like he had been in a fight. But he was immaculately dressed. He was wearing a beautiful black jacket slightly longer than the Star Fleet dress uniform with short tails in the back that was becoming fashionable in civilian circles. Golden embroidery lined the hem, cuffs and lapels. Like the dress uniform jacket, it was open in the front exposing a beautiful champagne-colored brocade waistcoat that was buttoned up to just above the sternum and extended several inches below the jacket's hem. Underneath the waistcoat, Kevin wore a silk shirt with a high collar, adorned by a red neckcloth. His pants were tailored from a similar material as the coat and were bloused into the tops of tall riding boots, shined to a high gloss.
The entire ensemble was fitted to accentuate his broad shoulders and narrow waist, with the pants tailored to his form in a most pleasing way. He was the cutting edge of 24th century fashion and looked, for all the galaxy, like Baron Longspire just alighted from his horse to scold, or perhaps kiss, Lady Mira.
Kevin's expression was a mixture of anxiety and wonderment. His hand fidgeted on the hilt of the blade at his hip. Shen, dressed in a similar fashion with a blue neckcloth, smiled broadly as Mira approached.
Kolar and Mira took the 3 steps up the short raised dais to face Kevin.
Thor nodded, “Who gives this woman away?”
Mira smiled still holding Kolar’s hand. “I am a free woman my lord Thor. I place myself in Kevin’s care.” She turned to Kevin. “My love, I see you . The man you are now. You are my friend, my lover, and the father of both of our children. I wish to grow old in wisdom with you in the good time and the bad.”
Kevin looked as if he would break into tears of joy. He stood silent for a moment, drinking in the sight of Mira, then after a gentle nudge in the ribs from Shen, he spoke. "Kitten, I never believed myself worthy of love, least of all to such a wonderful, loving, talented and beautiful woman. You have rescued me from the demons that haunt and into your protection I place my heart and my life."
He continued, "I take thee, Mira Angelique Rodal, to be my wedded wife, to love and protect you and our children from this day forth, in good times and bad, in sickness and in health, and against all enemies," at this his expression grew dark, "until death takes me from your loving embrace."
Mira winced a little. Yeah that was what She had been worried about. His death. Would being married to her, cause his death one day?
Oblivious to Mira’s inner turmoil Thor nodded his approval, “In a long established tradition the rings are a statement of your love. A circle is a common symbol for infinity because it has no beginning or end. A circle is eternal and endless, just the way love should be. While the center hole is a path to the future together.”
Mira reached into her fur. She had originally assumed if they ever did get married they would just use the traditional star fleet emblem wedding rings.
The engagement ring Kevin had given her was so beautiful she tried to match it, not an easy feat because of its beauty and how feminine it was. In Viking weddings the rings were unique to the couple and both male and female rings being the same to show unity. It had been hard to find a ring that would go with the engagement ring. She knew the engagement ring she had on right now had a matching wedding band already in Kevin’s pocket but the one she had gotten would be added to hers as well. She wanted no doubt they were together.
Handing her bouquet of roses and babies breath to Kolar. The bouquet had all red roses but one a single yellow rose to symbolize the first flowers Kevin had given her.
She took his hand and held it. ”With this ring I, Mira Angelina Rodale pledge my love and loyalty to you by the light of the sun and the power of the gods, As enduring as the mountains and as deep as the fjords. We will face challenges together, and find strength in our love. May Odin give us knowledge on our way to come. May Thor bless our union with strength and courage. Your strength is my shield against life’s storms. It inspires me to be free to be the warrior I am at your side.” She slipped the ring on his finger feeling a great relief sweeping over her at the words she had vowed in her wedding to Kevin in Faereyjar in 1100 AD
“I, Kevin Lance by, the strength of Thor’s hammer, I vow to love, be loyal to you, protect and cherish you.”
Thor held his hand out. For a moment she felt confused as to what he wanted then she remembered the handfasting part. She handed him the cord she had braided. It was part of ‘tying the knot’.
The binding represented the joining of lives, the intertwining of fates, and their commitment to one another. Oh jeez she hope she got this right. Thor nodded as he laid the braid over their joined hands then wrapped. It ended with a lose Knot under their joined hands. With her free hand Mira slipped one end into Kevin’s hand and the other end she held on to. After the exchange of the swords they would pull. If done right they would have the marriage knot left in the rope.
Thor grinned, “Our swords weren’t just tools of battle, they are symbols of our power, protection, and family honor. It symbolized the merging of two lineages, the forging of a new family, and the mutual respect between the bride and groom.
Mira nodded, “ both of us are orphans with no real family ties to bring unto our union. So I have chosen to forge one .” Mira did have some family on Trill and Betazed but none had been their for her. She didn’t need them now.
Mira took the Kur’leth from the sheath and held it point up. Waiting for Kevin to do the same. Of course traditionally her father would have given the sword to Kevin as a sign of trust that he would watch over his daughter and protect her. While the husband would be holding the blade of his ancestors. By gifting it to his bride, the groom was entrusting her with his family’s legacy, offering her not only his protection but also his trust and respect.
Catching on Kevin pressed his sword up against the one in her hand. The straight blade of the rapier was in counterpoint to the curved Kur’leth, a testament to the differences between bride and groom. A yet they were both blades, forged for an identical purpose much like their owners. Kevin then took both in his hand hand. It would not do to hand the rapier to Kolar hold at his age.
Mira gave a nod slowly pulling on her end of the braid as Kevin followed her lead. She smiled as the knot remain in the braid.
Thor chuckled “I pronounce you Husband and wife you may kiss your bride.”
After the kiss Thor announced “I present to you Commander Kevin Lance lord consort of house Rasmehlier and Captain Mira Rodale Lance. Lady of house Rasmehlier.”
At this point another married couple would hold a stick up high teasing them about jumping into marriage but Mira had said no to that part.
So all that was left was Kevin to carry her into the great hall. For the drinking of the Mead in drinking horns and for the toast to be given by the best man. Hopefully Kevin’s blue buddy wouldn’t make it awkward. then Lots of food and fun. She was looking forward to the fun part.
