Mira had Ashla on her hip and Kolar by the hand. “Push the botton.” She gave Kolar a smile then the door opened quickly, to her uncle’s surprised face.
“I was thinking I was going to need to hunt you down.” Thor told her with a laugh.
Mira raised an eyebrow. “Now, why would you think that?” She asked as he stepped back to let her in the room.
He picked up Kolar to hug him, then kissed Mira’s cheek. “It has been too long. It seemed like yesterday they reported you missing in action and then your back with two children. “He looked over her head at the door with a frown. “Kevin isn’t with you?” he put Kolar down to play.
Mira smiled taking a seat. “He had somethings to do before joining us.” Mira shook her finger. “Now, don’t start. I have come to ask you a favor.” At Thor’s surprised look she continued. “We need to be taken to Earth. I would like it to be covert. We would also like you to marry us on earth in a somewhat private and simple ceremony. Then, we need all the documents signed and approved as soon as possible. I don’t want anyone interfering with this. Once it is done, there is nothing anyone can do about it.” Mira told him as she adjusted Ashla to a more comfortable position.
Thor frowned. “Does Kevin understand that he is putting an even bigger target on himself than you have on you?”
Mira bit her lip and nodded. “And he plans on fighting Klvll.”
Thor was still frowning. “ Why? I understand that the two of you are in love and have finally decided to get married but if he loses…”
Mira shook her head no. “If he loses then we will walk away from it all and K’lar will challenge Klvll for his brother’s house.”
“That’s if he doesn’t just kill Kevin and claim you and the house.” Thor frowned at her, not at all happy with the things that could go wrong with this plan. Mira’s eyes darted around the room looking for Kolar but he's gone into the next room to play.
“Please watch what you say around Kolar. I don’t what him upset.” Mira said eagerly.
Thor gave a slight nod of his head. “When do you want to get married?”
“I think we should sneak off the base and get married tonight or tomorrow at the latest. I hope to be married before they find out I left.” Mira confided.
{Fleet Personnel Office, Spacedock One}
When Kevin had proposed getting married as soon as possible, he hadn't consider the paperwork involved. The Federation, and by extension Star Fleet, was a bureaucracy and they did love their customs, forms and regulations. For any other couple, it would have been merely an annoying process that marred an otherwise happy occasion. Given the irregularities of Kevin's background, it was positively a nightmare.
Kevin's official history began when he entered the Academy. The ship that responded to the Orion attack on the Dorcas James had mistaken him for one of the passengers, a Kevin Lance on his way to the Academy induction center. The real Kevin Lance had been killed by the Orions, along with his family and the crew of the Dorcas James, and lacking any real options, Kevin did not disabuse the crew of the rescue ship as to their error.
Now, he was required to establish his birth records to validate the marriage license. Finding the documents for the deceased Kevin Lance had been challenging but using them would expose Kevin's deceit to Star Fleet. Something that he had been working to avoid by distancing himself from the truth. Revelation would destroy everything that he had achieved. His career, his family, and the life that he was building for them. At least he had already confessed the truth to Mira and she had, inexplicably, agree to marry him regardless.
Kevin was considering who he could persuade, pressure or bribe into altering the birth records when a familiar voice interrupted, "Having problems Commander?"
Kevin looked up from his PADD to fix on an older officer in an Operations uniform with the rank of Lieutenant. The face wasn't familiar but Kevin would always recognize the voice. "Shadow," he address the Lieutenant flatly.
"Roderick, actually," the man replied with an air of unconcern as he dropped into a chair opposite Kevin.
"Whatever you want, I won't do it," Kevin continued stubbornly, "You'll have to do your own dirty work this time."
"Oh, it is nothing like that," Roderick answer with a wave of one hand as the other set a PADD on the table between them. "I merely wanted to congratulate you on your successful humanitarian aide mission. I understand that you are going to receive a commendation."
Roderick was referencing the cover mission that Doppler had replaced Kevin on but it was clear that he was actually talking about the mission to Amar VI where he had betrothed his son to a Klingon heiress. "Lurkan got himself killed," Kevin pointed out.
Roderick nodded, "We were concerned that the House of Duras would try something underhanded. Never occurred that they would be bold enough to provoke an open duel like that. Plus Lurkan turned out to be an easy mark."
"I'm surprised that you are willing to speak about it so openly," Kevin commented.
"Most people here are too busy with their own affairs to pay much attention to our conversation," Roderick said before pointing to the PADD he had set on the desk, "This will keep anyone eavesdropping on our conversation from hearing anything other than a couple of old friends catching up."
Kevin shrugged, "I would have thought that your higher ups would have been pissed off."
"They weren't very happy," Roderick replied with a shrug of his own, "but your solution did keep the House of Har'lock in the Chancellor's sphere."
"I am not going to force Kolar to marry Shan'nara, you plans be damned," Kevin responded with quiet anger, "I plan to keep the two of them as far away from each other as possible."
Roderick spread his hands in mock resignation, "Your choice. Were not convinced that the High Council will approve the inheritance of the House of Rasmehlier to a non-Klingon anyways. Regardless, you bought us the better part of two decades to come up with alternatives."
Kevin shook his head in disgust. "What do you want, Roderick?"
"To confess," the Lieutenant replied without hesitation, "It is high time that you know who you are working for. I am an agent for a clandestine organization known only as Section 31. We operate on the fringes to ensure the safety of the Federation, employing extraordinary measures in times of extreme threat."
Kevin brows knitted. He had heard tales of black operatives and methods that bordered on the unethical but they were little more than urban legend. Now Roderick was basically admitting that such rumors had foundation and it fit with the things that Kevin had been asked to do, especially the elimination of Nauarchus Saeihr.
"But how is securing the allegiance through marriage of a minor House a measure in a 'time of extreme threat'?" Kevin asked.
Roderick was undeterred. "Admittedly it is not a 'time of extreme threat'," he answered, "but as a security officer, you know that the best way to deescalate a situation is to prevent it from ever escalating in the first place."
Kevin nodded slowly. "What is it that you want," he asked.
"We want you to become part of Section 31," Roderick replied.
"Why?"
"I mentioned before that we rely on people of good character making the best choice in an awful situation," Roderick continued, "You have, through your actions, proven that you are just that sort of person. And your proximity to Captain Rodale makes you a highly desirable asset."
"How does Mira figure into all this," Kevin asked.
"I don't think that anyone, least of all Captain Rodale, knows how important she is or why," Roderick confessed, "But she has connections to so many inside and outside the Federation that we need to keep her safe. And who better to do so than her husband?"
Kevin started at the suggestion that Roderick knew their plans.
"Think about it," Roderick continued as he stood up, "I don't need an immediate answer. Oh and don't worry about the birth records for the marriage certificate. While we were talking, the Section 31 codebreakers hacked your file. Everything is in order."
Kevin looked back to the birth records for Kevin Lance and they indeed had changed to reflect his DNA and biological makeup. He looked back up, Roderick and his PADD were gone.
A ray of optimism pierced through the gloom that had been surround him. This was even better than he could have hoped for or even been able to arrange himself. With the altered records, he was able to complete the application with little further problem. Only a nagging suspicion that he had made a deal with the devil.

Thor watched her with a half grin on his face. “Your children have been a joy to get to know. I only wish you could have traveled with us.”
Mira sighed, it had been her plan to travel with them. “I know. I had a completely different idea of how our trip here to earth would be like, but ….” She frowned. “Was your contact in s31 able to find out who took us and who the doubles were?”
Now it was Thor’s turn to frown. “It would seem your were right. Everyone you named has been accounted for.”
Mira glanced down at Vaytoc laying contently on the floor. “He did say they smelt funny. It could be the mirror universe has a different scent to them?”
Thor nodded. “So they are leaning towards the mirror universe as well. And, with your report on hearing there was yet another opening into that dimension, they are going to want it closed.”
Mira held one hand up. “that is in Orion space.” She placed a hand gently on her daughter’s stomach. “I can’t miss anymore of my children’s life. I never knew I wanted kids, but now that they are here… Thor I wouldn’t just kill for them, I would destroy the whole galaxy for them.”
Thor raised an eyebrow, but nodded his understanding. “What about this marriage of your son?”
Mira’s eyes went to Kolar playing with a truck. “If the two of them fall in love, then fine. But I am giving my protection to the little girl. She is just a little younger than I was when I lost my parents. I can’t stand the idea of her not being raised with love. She is about Krax and Moraq's age. Even Atan is closer to her age then Kolar is. I’ll talk to K’lar about it. He does have 3 sons. One will take over K’lar's house, one will take over Rasmehlier house, and the third might fall in love and take over house Har’lock.” Mira gave a little shrug. It could work, but she wasn’t going to hold her breath. “In the meantime, we will strengthen Har’lok’s house, take care of my children and deal with what come our way.”
