{Family quarters}
It had taken some ingenuity on Kevin's part to move Ashla and get Mira into bed without waking either one of his girls up. But he had done it! K'ner had been very clear that Mira was on light duty and needed time to recuperate from their enforced imprisonment that had all but drained Mira, the pregnancy under those conditions, and the surgery that had far more complications then the doctor had hoped.
Zimia had stopped by with the original bassinet Venus had slept in before a crib had been installed into the wall of their quarters. Mira had put one in her room for Kolar as well, but Kolar had outgrown it. Now Kolar and Vaytoc shared the Captain’s old bedroom while Mira and he shared his quarters and the addition that used to be the corridor. For now, until little Ashla slept through the night, she would sleep by them.
He and Kolar were sitting on the couch reading a book he had started with his son before they had all been captured when the home office console beeped.
Frowning, he activated it. Both Fleet Admiral Proll and Ambassador M'Niras was on the other end.
"It's true you are all alive!" M'Niras all but shouted. "Where is Mira?!"
Kevin took the seat. "Recovering. I know she is working on a full report, but we were held prisoner on an alien base station and experimented on. Mira is very drained of energy. It was what the aliens that held us fed on. She has just had an operation and a baby. I just got them both asleep."
Proll nodded while M'Niras seemed to want to argue, but Proll cut him off. "Boy or girl?"
Kevin relaxed only slightly. "A little girl. Ashla Rodale Lance. Is what Mira named her." Well, according to Mira, he had named their daughter. It's surprised him that he had been comfortable enough to give that much information away.
M'Niras laughed. "Oh no, can this galaxy handle 2 Rodale women?" He shook his head, still chuckling at his joke.
Kevin returned the conversation back to business. "We recovered most of the missing ships and crews. But from what we could tell, many had been killed. We lost 10% of our crew, and the ship will have to be put in for repairs, Sir."
Proll nodded. "The Norris is due for some upgrades as well. The war with the Gorn is still ongoing. Mira is turning out to be a Phoenix. This is the second time she was presumed dead. It's going to cause quite a stir with the Klingons. Hmm." Proll frowned.
"I had planned on telling Mira this, but since you two are still together and have 2 children, you should know as well. Has she ever talked about her incident with the Orions when she was an Ensign?"
Kevin nodded she had been very open about her life to him.
"Well, everyone of the women who had been taken was extracted back from the Orions."
Kevin nodded he was aware of this.
"All of them have disappear again but Mira," Proll reported, "We are looking into it but so far not a trace of them have been found. That and a few challenges have been made for her position with the Klingons. She is going to be very busy when she gets back."
Kevin wasn't pleased to hear any of that, but he just nodded. He wondered what Shadow's take on this might be and how to get ahold of him. Might be time for a friendly message to Admiral Desai.
Proll went on, "I'll be looking for your reports soon and when you get back, there will be a dinner."
"Yes, Admiral," Kevin replied noncommittally. Mira wouldn't be happy about having to sit through a dinner with these two old cats and he was little pleased himself.
"One last thing," Proll continued, "Your crew's living quarters on Starbase 364 were reconfigured after you have been missing in action for six months, included Mira's family quarters."
This is getting better and better, Kevin thought sourly, and said aloud, "Captain Rodale is going to kill your Operations Officer."
"Oh, I’m certain that you will see that he comes to no harm." the Admiral gave a toothy smile, "Proll, out."
Kevin considered waking Mira to inform her but decided that the news could wait. She was going to be hopping mad about losing the family quarters. Kevin suspected that it was more from being denied a long, leisurely bath in a deep tub than from any other inconvenience but it was information that was best delivered after a good night's sleep.
