In Healing Highs, Destiny Lies

Tuuuyyyy Tuuuyyyy Tuuuyyyy
The now familiar red-alarm klaxon of a federation starship rang throughout sickbay.

"Sir! 5 Klingons coming in with First degree radiation burns!"

"Sir! The betazoid is falling into a coma!"

"Sir! The EPS grid is coming down, we'll lose power in a minute!"

It all sounded muffled as Durzo handed the auto-suture to the Ensign beside her, and then moved to the side as a Klingon was brought in on a stretcher.

"Move away! Move away!" she shouted to the crewmen who had brought the Klingon in.

"You there! Spread some dermal paste over the burns!"

Satisfied that the ensign could handle it, Durzo dashed to the Betazoid. Glancing at the monitors, she could see that their heart rate was dropping below 15. She grabbed a hypospray, and loaded it with Zuculal Metazen, and injected it below the neck of the Betazoid. "That should stabilize them for the time being. We might need to clear some biobeds, more Klingons are coming in." she told the ensign beside her.

A sudden tremor caused Durzo to lose balance and fall to the floor. Pain streaked through her wrists as she tried to stop herself, bashing her head. She watched as one of the stretchers started rolling away, hitting a wall, and breaking, the Klingon on top collapsing to the ground.

"Sir! The Captain is in critical condition!"

Durzo got up ignoring the buzzing in her head, and bolted to the stretcher being brought in, the faceless Captain with a massive gash in the back, lying on top, blood gushing out. "Ensign! Clear the Betazoid off the biobed!"

"We lift him in 3" Durzo was about to heave up the captain with the other medical personnel, as the ship groaned, and the gravity began to fail.

Durzo felt the floor falling away from under her feet as –

=/\= Your Holodeck reservation has ended =/\=

The white bloodstained walls of the apoctalyptic sickbay dissapeared, transforming into the yellow grid on black of the Holodeck, and gravity returned, Durzo collapsing back onto the cold floor.

She got up slowly, and limped out, as two security officers came in, carrying Anbo-Jyutsu equipment. "You alright Lieutenant?" One of them asked, eyeing the bruises covering her body. "Yes. Thank you." She muttered back.

After what seemed like forever, she finally made it back to her quarters, and collapsed onto her bed.

After a few minutes of just laying down, calming her thundering heart, she began to do a mental check of her body. From the pain still gashing through her red swollen left hand, she could tell that it was sprained. She didn't think she'd had a concussion when she hit her head, but she'd have to check with a scanner.

Groaning from the pain, she crawled to the bathroom. Splashing some water onto her face, she looked at her own reflection in the mirror. She looked terrible, with a massive dark purple bruise on her forehead. Opening one of the cupboards with her right hand, she grabbed a piece of cloth, and fashioned a sling for herself.

Stumbling back to her bed, she collapsed once more, being careful to not put pressure on her left hand. When the 'night' fell on the ship, she would creep to sickbay and use a cellular regenerator to fix her hand and bruises. By tomorrow there would be no signs of her injuries left.

Back during the occupation, she suffered injuries like this daily, and she barely noticed. Now, she couldn't even walk straight. Signs of old age, she guessed.

She knew she shouldn't push herself so hard, it did her more harm than good. But she couldn't push out the memories of her comrades falling in battle, with her by their sides, unable to heal them. They had given up their lives to free the Motherland, and now that freedom had finally come, she was running away to serve on a starship, instead of healing her comrades.

She told herself that she was helping more people this way.

With the ship finally heading to warp in a few days, she would forever leave that life behind, and she knew that ultimately, she'd never be sure if it was for the better.
