A Bad Plan

Kevin approached Thall in the majordomo’s office when he was alone. “How bad is it?” Kevin asked in a flat tone.

Thall looked at the Star Fleet officer in front of his desk. He instinctively felt that he shouldn’t answer the adversary’s questions but Lady Rasmehlier trusted him. Overcoming his reluctant, Thall spoke, “What J’pok said has much truth in it. Since the death of Kolar, the House has languished. Gharal is completely unsuitable but if Lady Rasmehlier won’t take leadership, it will be left to him. It would be best if the Chancellor were to allow K’lar to unite the two houses but his close association with Star Fleet makes that impossible. And now, my Lady insists on devoting a large portion of the House’s assets on an assassination contract.”

“Tell me about this Isbethal,” Kevin demanded.

“She is an assassin,” Thall replied uneasily, “Very good at what she does but regardless of the outcome, the body count will be high.”

“What does Klingon honor say about that?” Kevin questioned with a hint of disdain in his voice.

Thall paused in his reply, the conflict clear on his face, “It is not the warrior’s way to use such an underhanded method to eliminate one’s enemies. A posthumous contract seeking revenge is one thing but to activate one prior to one’s own demise is…” Thall’s voice trailed off but it left Kevin in little doubt of his feelings.

"And neither Mira killing J’pok or having him killed gets Kolar back," Kevin observed.

"I have a plan," Thall suggested, "I shall take the House's warriors, all that can be spared from the honor guard attending the Lady to the High Council, and attack J'pok's forces to recover the boy."

Kevin could imagine a pitched battle occurring in the capital city. He could also imagine one of the Klingons killing Kolar should the battle go against J'pok's warriors. "I can't allow that," he said.

"You can't allow?" Thall's voice raised in challenge, "Lady Rasmehlier is the judge of what is allowed,"

"Your plan is going to get Kolar killed," Kevin countered angrily, "Lady Rasmehlier will NOT be happy with that outcome."

Thall glowered at Kevin but he did not reply.

"I am Captain Rodale's executive officer," Kevin continued, "and I am as committed to her best interests as surely as you are. I am also Kolar's father. I will not allow you to embark on any course of action that will put our son into danger."

"While you are attacking outside, I will covertly enter where Kolar is being held and pluck him out," Kevin replied.

"You would avoid an honorable challenge by sneaking in?" Thall asked?

"Even if Kolar's life weren't threatened, I couldn't care less about Klingon honor," Kevin admitted, "Besides use of deception isn't dishonorable, it's smart. If J'pok isn't intelligent enough to figure out that his forces are being drawn off, that's his problem, not mine."
