K'ner rolled her head, her neck cracking riotously. That always felt so good, but she didn't care for how she usually got into that condition.

She signed off on the last report, shaking her head. "Damn CMO quitter! Gads I hate paperwork of this volume, I'll be glad to go back to Asst CMO rather than acting CMO!"

Billingsly looked over. "What are you complaining about now Chief?"

K'ner looked over at the duty nurse. Even with ship-wide shore leave, essential departments had to remain staffed. "Only Haz team calls me Chief kiddo."

Billingsly huffed. "Well maybe I'll put in for a transfer!"

K'ner smiled. "You should consider that decision carefully. If you like your personal time and recreational activities, you won't last long."

"You don't think I can handle it?"

K'ner shook her head. "I didn't say that. I meant what I said. There's little compensation to the add'l duty except extra duty and juggling two schedules."

Billingsly looked puzzled. "You don't have any fun?"

K'ner smiled. "I didn't say that either, but for Haz team, fun is cleaning, exercising, AARs, mission prep, and training. It takes a certain mindset, and no small amount of commitment, every day. If you're actually interested, I'll take you through a typical day with me."

She was considering that as she heard subtle footsteps.

"Don't do it! Even we wouldn't shadow the Chief for one of her days. Nope... uh uh." Sgt Deena smiled as she said it but from the look in her eyes, Billingsly thought there may be a large grain of truth to her statement as well.

"Pen! What are you Nod doing here?" K'ner shoulder-checked both and stepped back.

"We're headed down to relieve Peke and Taz on the ground watch. You need anything from planetside?"

K'ner shook her head. "Naw, got everything I need at the moment." She looked askance at Nurse Billingsly who was trying to decide if she'd been insulted or forewarned.

She looked at the trio, her gaze landing on K'ner. "Shift is over at three bells. I'll meet you at the gym and we'll just see who can keep up with who!" With that she turned to continue her tasks, leaving the trio to themselves.

Deena laughed lightly. "She doesn't have any idea does she?"

K'ner shook her head. "She will though. Who knows, she might surprise us."

Nod laughed as well and K'ner turned her gaze on her. "You shouldn't laugh... You remember how you were when you first came to me?"

Nod sobered quickly, then smiled. "Yeah, I do. If you do with her what you did with me, and she can stick it out, just let us know. We'll secure that corner bunk for her."

K'ner smiled, she continued to admire the teams she'd help build.

"Now haul out! Duty calls!" K'ner barked and the pair snapped to and wasted no time exiting.

It was several meters along the corridor when Deena laughed. "How does she do that?"

Nod chuckled. "When you figure that out, she'll give you Charlie Element."

They both laughed and headed down to relieve their teammates.
