Kevin disconnected the communicator satisfied with the report from the medical bay. Commander Rodale’s surgery to repair the dermal damage was a success and she was expected to make a fully recovery. He had been miserable since she had been beamed back from Avenger, berating himself for leading the Cardassians away from the old Earth ship rather than following Delta-01. Had she died…
He shook his head against such negative thoughts. She had not died and would soon be back at duty, albeit with shorter hair. Kevin turned his attention to the science and engineering officers at the tactical console. They were discussing the results of the analysis of the debris from the Avenger.
“The mixture of archaic technology suggests the debris is from multiple vessels,” the Vulcan engineering ensign stated.
“I concur,” the science officer replied, “but the likelihood of two foreign vessels being affected by a natural phenomenon is extremely low. I am inclined to believe that whatever happened was not a natural occurrence.”
“Some of the debris is from Avenger. What do we know about the other debris?” Kevin asked.
“The records of the period are incomplete,” the Vulcan equivocated, “but some of the more complex equipment suggests an earlier design of Romulan technology.”
“So there may be a 22nd Century Warbird somewhere in the nebula?”
The Vulcan stared at Kevin without speaking, a mannerism that Kevin interpreted as a Vulcan shrug. Turning to the science officer, Kevin asked, “What does the analysis of the debris tell us?”
“Radiometric dating confirms that the Avenger is displaced from its century,” the science officer, “but much more interesting is the presence of residual polaric energy.”
“Wasn’t the use of polaric energy outlawed in the mid-23rd century?”
The science officer nodded, “By treaty in 2263. We found a greater concentration of polaric ions in the debris from Avenger. Given that Earth ships did not employ polaric energy, it is reasonable to assume that the Romulans used it in a weapon that they attacked the Avenger with.
Kevin stroked his beard as he considered the information. “Scan the Avenger for polaric ions,” he ordered, “I want confirmation that we are dealing with a polaric weapon.
