"Sir, I have been investigating this situation down here. I have taken into custody one of the people responsible for starting a war between the Undine and the outpost here. I have also entered into negotiations with an Undine who is interested in meeting you."

Suddenly the comms went quiet again.

Michael shot a look towards the Bolian communications officer.

“Rodale closed the channel, sir.” She answered without being asked.

Michael returned to his command chair and started reading the scans that were being relayed to his arm rest display. The away teams appeared to still be fine, life-signs were stable. He hated this feeling of hopelessness and redundancy.

In what might be described as an insane choice later, he came to a decision. “Keegan,” he addressed the assistant flight control officer currently manning the helm, “Prepare the ship for planetary landing. If we can’t transport our people up, we’ll go down to them.”

Keegan nodded. “Aye, sir.” Keegan knew that Defiant-class vessels were equipped with a landing gear and were fully capable of planetary landings, but the instances were so rare that Keegan hadn’t heard of the manoeuvre being carried out before. And he certainly hadn’t attempted one himself before.

Michael could see the worry on the young officer’s face, and stepped forward towards the helm. He placed a reassuring hand on Keegan’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, I’m hoping we don’t need to go down there, but I’d like the ship prepared to do so if we are left with little choice.”
