Here we go!

Posted on Mon Aug 21st, 2023 @ 7:48pm by Lieutenant Betaras K'ner & Lieutenant Durzo Sheela

Mission: Getting Ready (Character Development)
Location: USS Chuck Norris
Timeline: current - (post holo-mission)

K'ner left the holodeck with her disguise, thinking to save it for later in case she ever needed it again. Checking the chrono she could see she was almost late to meet up with the CMO so she hot-footed it to her quarters to drop this load and freshen up quickly.

[Sickbay]

Her combat team was off rotation so she'd been assigned shift with the new CMO. This would be a good time to meet her and suss out how their interactions would work out. K'ner's day-to-day schedule as a combat medic split her attention between two departments sometimes, and while her teams' CO understood needing to keep up her med skills, it could make for some tense moments from the medical staff when she wasn't around as much.

With one last check of her uniform she stepped through into sickbay, pausing to the side to cast a gaze around while not blocking the door. No immediate emergencies seemed to be pulling everyone's attention at the moment and she traded a couple of nods of greeting. She stepped towards the CMO's office when she noticed a new face in the crowd of almost new faces she was still getting familiar with.

In this modern time of medical miracles it was rare to see scars very much, which meant the LT had seen some combat time and couldn't get to higher medical attention in time, or wore them as a badge of honor as K'ner had since she lost her brother.

She waited for the LT to finish her conversation and got her attention. "Greetings Lieutenant. I'm one of the combat medics that will be under your purview when I'm not dodging projectiles and energy blasts dragging patients out of the thick and keeping them stable until we can get back for your kind attentions."

Lieutenant Sheela turned around, eyeing the young Flaxian woman in front of her. Although she looked older than in the photo on the computer, there was only one Flaxian under her command. "Greetings, Lieutenant K'ner. Welcome aboard!" Sheela had made sure to memorise the names and faces of everyone under her command before stepping on-ship. "Could you step into my office for a moment? I need to discuss some details with you" She continued, showing the way with her hand.

"Absolutely Lt, or do you prefer Doc, or LT Sheela... Dr Sheela?" K'ner paused, considering her own name's format. "Or is your family name Durzo and not Sheela?

K'ner turned in the proffered direction, figuring, 'so far so good, she hasn't chewed my head off, so she doesn't have something to prove. Now to work on my challenging social skills,' she thought.

"On Bajor we say the 'Family name' first, so it's Dr Sheela for you." Durzo could tell that the LT JR was quite nervous, understandably. "I wanted to ask you what kind of medical training you have. Says here you were in the Combat Medic Pipeline in Starfleet Academy. As a person who hasn't ever gone there, I'll need some assistance to understand what kinds of work you are comfortable with."

K'ner smiled, warming quickly to the subject. She laid out the sequence for the medic pipeline, and how it coincided with the regular combat training she also had to acquire. "It was quite the juggling act, trying to squeeze in the time to study my medical reqs, maintain the fitness standards, combat maneuvers, and find time to sleep here and there. But, I'm pretty flexible now, just gotta keep abreast of ongoing medical procedures that can benefit us in the field, and so we can best prepare our injured properly as to maximize their life expectancy and healing when we get 'em back to you."

"I think xenobiology is probably my biggest challenge. There are just so many variations out there. Right now I focus on who we have on the combat teams, then the crew in general. When I can, I widen my study boundaries to stay somewhat familiar with others we may encounter."

"I was also wondering if you could also give me a run through of what you think of everyone else on the team. Its something I ask everyone, to see how people work together."

K'ner takes a deep breath, considering. "We've got a number of new crew and my interactions with them has been brief, but the others... hmmm, let's start at the top. Captain B. Seems fair, not prone to emotional responses, is a thinker and doesn't necessarily let everything fall to her subordinates but she listens to her staff and acts accordingly. I think she's being replaced just now with a new guy... ummmm, Meezo or Interozo... I'm guessing we'll get an announcement any moment on that if it's actually true.

"Then there's Lizzy, Cdr Dersch. Human, her husband is the Chief Sec Officer on the Sunfire. About all I know of her background really. She's not unapproachable, we just haven't needed to interact much outside of official duties, but she does have some medical skills so you may want to review that, just in case we need her... that's where I've chatted with her, but almost exclusively about that. I know about her hubby just because I'm on the combat team and he's visited a couple of times.

"Um, Cdr Ezah is a Klingon.. To be more exact, a Klingon Female, and all that that entails, but she does have a wicked sense of humor that's not understand by everyone sometimes... She considers herself superior in most aspects, but it's just that Klingon perspective thing, she doesn't look down on anyone really, but you have to earn her respect. Once you've reached that point, she definitely has your back! Just watch yourself if you spar with her... ouch!

"Let's see... then it's Cdr Rodale I think. She's COO, a trill, but not joined. She's kind of a little thing, almost mousey, but boy, don't underestimate her, she's sneaky!" K'ner smiles just a bit, remembering how she found out the hard way. "If you like Mok'bara, then she's your girl. She can also climb almost anything. Very... high-energy...

K'ner took another deep breath as she considered who's next. "The CEO just left, so we should have a new one, I haven't heard who that will be. There's Lt Kronnelti and Sokolov above me. They're more regular security, not combat personnel like me. My detachment is mostly a detached squad assigned here to assist, and the combat medics do double-duty with your folks.

"Kronnelti is a tall Klingon, male, not bulked up like a lot. Has his share of the scars they like so much but he's not mad all the time like a lot of Klingons I've run into. Firm but fair, he's usually calm and serious whenever I've spent time with him. Not sure what all he does on his off time, but like more Klingons he's probably practicing his war skills...

"Sokolov... what can I say, he's human, older than most, tall, like Kronnelti but bigger, beard too. Not afraid of much, and since he's been around more than most people, even the career-path folks, he's got lots of skills and experience. He's got like 5 kilos of awards on his dress uniform when we kit up for an occasion. He has to have one or two of us with him when he goes on shore leave, which he doesn't always do... go on shore leave that is... I'm not exactly sure why that is, I don't cultivate rumors, but he had a higher rank at one time. Good man though from my exposure to him. They both can hold their own when they're sparring, it's rough to watch. At least one of the combat medics are required to be on-hand when they do."

K'ner wrapped up with a few more crew members, giving a brief overview, then goes back and notes any medical conditions she should be aware of. . .

Lt. Sheela was surprised that the Flaxian was able to give such a thorough run through with no preparation. Although then again she could have easily anticipated the question, and prepared beforehand. "Well, thank you. I’m sure it’ll be a pleasure to work with you and the rest of the team. And if you’re worried about not exactly being 100% welcome here as you have to split your time between Sickbay and the rest of the ship, you should know that I too used to be a combat medic, and don’t at all find it a problem."

K'ner's estimation of the new Doc just jumped up a big notch. This should prove to be a good working assignment.

"Thanks. I enjoy my downtime when I can get it, but I take my duty time serious, especially since me being called upon, whether my combat squad or the medical detachment, means something hasn't gone to plan, and the consequences may well be dire. I look forward to working with you in whatever capacity we find ourselves!"

K'ner fell into the groove, assisting the regular medical staff with their day's duties. . . She was looking forward to this tour.
