Empty Threats

With the away team having finally beamed back up to the ship from the planet’s surface, it had been decided that Grand Marshall Sobko would be monitored in sickbay under strict guard.

Doctor Hauser had placed Sobko on the biobed and activated the physical restraints. A vulgar and archaic method of ensuring somebody was unable to move, but one that the Captain himself had insisted upon if Sobko was to be treated in sickbay. Usually these restraints were only used in times where a patient had suffered major trauma and were unable to stay still themselves, either through convulsions or fitting. Sobko would be doing neither of these things.

In sickbay with Doctor Hauser was Captain Winters, Lieutenant Commanders Pibb and Wyatt, and Lieutenants JG Kronnelti and Wright. The non-medical staff simply observed as the Doctor worked on the still unconscious man.

“Why hasn’t he regained consciousness, Doctor?” Winters asked. “I thought you said he only had concussion?”

Doctor Hauser raised his eyebrows, while continuing to scan the unconscious man, “That would be the case if this man were human.” He paused for a moment, taking a second to re-read his medical tricorder. He snapped the device shut and looked up towards his CO, “This man has Klingon DNA, sir. In fact, the only thing that isn’t Klingon about him is his appearance.”

The Captain frowned. Another twist in the Onassis story. “You mean he’s altered his appearance to look human?”

“Possibly.” The Doctor answered honestly, “Perhaps on a genetic level this is what he normally looks like. Or on the other hand, perhaps he has undertaken major cosmetic surgery to change his appearance. I can’t tell from these scans.”

Pibb shifted uncomfortably. “Shall I increase security outside sickbay, sir?”

“No, not at this time.” Winters raised a hand. “Let’s wake him up and see what we are dealing with. I hate not having all the pieces of a puzzle.” The CO looked towards the Doctor, “Wake him.”

Hauser picked up a hypospray and programmed it to give double the dose of Methylphenidate than he would give to a human male. He pressed it against Sobko’s neck and injected the man with the rousing agent. Slowly but surely the man regained consciousness.
