Mission:
Trial by Fire
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Current
ON
Finchley entered Sickbay. His stomach was kind of queasy, not because he'd eaten or drank anything to make him feel ill, it was just that over his career, he'd spent more than his fair share *in his opinion* there through various in service injuries.
In a sense, it was like having an allergic reaction, though he had no outward signs save a look of apprehension. He looked around for someone who looked like they were in charge, but most of them were pre-occupied with carrying out their duties.
"I eh...." he began in a slightly nervous voice "I...was loo...looking f...for the eh, the Chief Medical Of...Officer. Can any...one tell m...me if they're available?"
Tyjuuc sat right next to the door as that is here her on-site office is. "I am the one you seek but I'm currently busy what do you seek?" She asked focusing on her computer screen.
"Lieutenant Kerr" Finchley said pointing to himself, then realising how stupid he must have looked, added "I'm here fo...for my physical check up."
"Find a biobed and sit a medical officer will be with you." She said not looking away from her screen
"Thank you" Finchley said, moving across to a biobed that was free. Sitting down, he looked about him pensively as he awaited one of the medical team to come and tend to him.
A Asian Human Male came up to Finchley and said. “I’m doctor in training Wu. Are you Mr Kerr?” Xun Wu asked holding a medical tricorder.
"I am" Finchley replied, watching intensely as the Doctor carried on.
“Are you here for the physical and psychotic examination?”
"Physical yes" Finchley replied "I had my psychoanalysis tests last month."
Wu began to scan him with the tricorder. “Are you new?” He asked trying to make small talk.
"Fairly new, yes" Finchley replied, trying to keep his end of the small talk up and not look like he wanted to be anywhere but in Sickbay.
“Starfleet protcal is your new we don’t have a counselling team the Chief Medic is the acting Chief Counsellor.” He said closing the tricorder.
"Why do I need to see the Chief Counsellor?" Finchley asked "I don't have any problems I need to talk them about, and I've passed my psychoanalysis tests as I said just now."
“Starfleet protcal for new posted officers. Physical and Mental checks... Please it’s been a stressful day and i’m just a cadet.”
"Fair enough, I was just curious" Finchley said "It's the first time I've had to do this as part of a physical, even when I'd transferred, from another posting, but I suppose each assignment is different. Will I see them here just now or do I have to schedule a meeting for another time?"
Wu grabbed his hand and placed it against his like a hive five. “Okay push until i say stop... Also she’s very very busy i’ll see once we’re done here.”
Finchley pushed against the medics hand as he was asked, thinking that he'd just have to wait and see the Chief Medical Officer...Counsellor, when they were free.
“Lieutenant Kerr your physically fit for duty.” Wu said. “You want me to check if she’s free now or schedule another time.”
"If you could check and see if she's free now that would be much appreciated, thank you" Finchley replied.
Wu smiled and walked away. Few moments later a Vulcan female wearing her blue uniform with the rank of Lieutenant and a light pink lab coat. “I’m lieutenant Tyjuuc may i sit down?” She said a soft and calming voice.
"Of course, please do" Finchley replied, jumping down of the biobed and standing as a matter of respect for the Officer in charge of the Medical/Counselling department.
Tyjuuc jumped up on the biobed and patted the bed as to say sit. “I’m sorry for earlier it’s not easy being the chief medical officer and the only counsellor.”
Surprised that a Vulcan Officer was so...casual, Finchley gingerly sat on the biobed, replying "That's ok, it must be difficult juggling two different departments and all the work that they entail."
“I’m only acting chief counsellor... How was your journey to this starship?” Tyjuuc asked.
"Better than the mission that went before it" Finchley laughed out loud, and it was an actual belly laugh, remembering what he and his team had come through, "though I'm glad to be somewhere that's quiet...well, mostly."
Tyjuuc smiled while he laughed. “Tuesday is chaotic. How did your mission go?” She asked.
"Not so great" Finchley said "it was meant to be a cake walk, in and out in five minutes, only nobody had bothered to tell karma that. First off our shuttle developed engine problems, then our computer guidance system malfunctioned so we had to set down a few miles away from our target. The terrain was tough going, mostly jungle and we didn't have cutting tools so we had to improvise. When we finally made it to our target, the place was meant to have minimal security, instead it had a garrison, so we had to come up with a new plan to get in. Once we did, the plans we had for the internal of the building we were in were hopelessly out of date, so we had to check room by room till we had our target. Once we did, the security had been updated with an algorithmic coder which had to be bypassed. We eventually did that, got what we went for and began to make our way back out the target to our shuttle. As we passed a security tower, we triggered an alarm and all hell broke loose. We had to fight our way out of the area and if I'm honest, it was a rear guard action for the last mile back to the shuttle and I didn't think we were going to make it, but make it we did. Though we had the problem with guidance and the engines, we did manage to take off and get away. Thankfully they defenders didn't have any pursuit craft, so we limped back to our ship. So, I'm appreciating a little peace and quiet as you can imagine" he finished.
Tyjuuc folded her arms and said. "But's only a part of the job being in Starfleet don't you agree?"
Finchley noted the change in posture and demeanour from the Doctor so replied "Yes, it is, what I was referring to there was the difference between my last posting and my journey here to this one. I have absolutely no problem with carrying out my duties, no matter where I'm posted, whether it be Starship, Starbase, Colony or some hole in the ground on some distant comet in furthest reaches of the Federation space, my one hundred percent commitment will be what I give" he finished.
Tyjuuc took of her light pink lab coat, folded it on her lap listening she was intrigued how far "hundred percent commitment" was. "Say your commanding officer has been taken over by a hostile entity." She said. "There's no evidence of it the First Officer orders the Captain to stand down... They don't who do you support? The Captain in a strange mood or the First Officer who has nothing to prove the Captain's body has been taken over."
"As per Starfleet orders, and until I had proof to the contrary that the Captain had been taken over by a hostile entity, I'd follow the Senior Officers orders" Finchley replied "In the scenario you mentioned just now, I would follow the Captains orders."
Tyjuuc jumped of the bio bed. "Your mentally fit for duty." and walked away clicking her fingers she shouted holding her lab coat across or arm. "Nurse Wu free that bio bed." She said pointing to Mr Finchley Kerr.
Yijun came over. He looked like Xun the doctor that seen him eariler. Yijun asked softly. "Everything okay?"
Getting down off of the biobed, Finchley replied "Yes, thanks. I'm happy to be declared physically and mentally fit for duty. If there's nothing else I need to do here, I'd like to return to duty" he finished.
"Of course have a nice day." Yijun said smiling
"You to" Finchley replied, then made his way out of Sickbay and back to his duty position.
