"Hold please," Ensign Pibb called from the corridor.

vonMcCormick held the door open long enough for Pibb to enter. "Bridge," he said after it closed. "Ensign, are you wearing your hair differently?"

"It is still regulation, Captain," Pibb replied. "May I speak, sir?"

"Self-expression doesn't seem to be one of your problems. ...You're bothered that you were unable to finish the mission while I was incapacitated."

"I failed to resolve the situation."

"Sometimes there is no correct resolution. It's a test of character."

"May I ask what you would have done?"

"Well, Mr. Pibb, I don't even know what's going on. Can you give me a status update?"
