Rory closed the comms channel that he had established between the shuttle and the ship, and started manoeuvring the small craft as ordered towards the shuttle bay.

“Looks like a good ship,” Rory spoke aloud as he admired the defiant-class vessel, “I hope I’ll get an opportunity to utilise my scientific expertise on her.”

Shuttle 12 slowly and carefully came to a stop on the deck of the shuttle bay, and Rory completed the docking procedures confidently. Despite being a science officer, he was a competent pilot too, something he rarely enjoyed announcing publicly.

Stepping off the shuttle, his duffel bag thrown around his shoulder, he made his way out into one of the corridors of the ship. Defiant-class ships were famously small compared to other ship classes, and being a junior officer he was sure that he’d end up sharing quarters with somebody else. But for now, he made his way to the bridge as ordered.

Rory walked onto the command hub of the ship and gazed at the relatively small bridge. His eyes eventually found Captain Winters. “Sir, Lieutenant junior grade Rory O’Connelly reporting to you as ordered.” His thick Scottish accent clear for everyone to hear, he handed a PADD to his new commanding officer and stood to attention. “You’ll find my orders there, sir.”

Aurther took the PADD from the young man and quickly skim-read over the contents. Everything appeared to be in order. “Welcome aboard Lieutenant O’Connelly. It’ll be nice having someone heading up the science department on the ship.”

“Thank you, Captain.” Rory smiled, “I’m looking forward to commencing my duties as soon as I can.”

Aurther smiled back, “If you’re that keen to start, throw your duffel bag under that console over there,” he pointed at a console towards the back of the bridge, “and take a seat at science.”
