| Personal History | Born in 1955 in the far northern town of Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Edvin Nyquist grew up during his formative years amid the eerie grandeur of the polar nights and the unhurried pace of a pioneer village, oblivious to the tragedy their civilization was heading towards. Edvin, only five years old when he entered, involuntarily, the world-wide eugenic project that would mark the tragic fate of his race. The program was meant to create the “idealized human beings” but instead heralded the long-term curse that was going to destroy the Onlie culture, trapping Edvin’s generation between the two extremes. As the experiment in eugenics spiraled out of control, it resulted in the development of an incurable disease that came to be known as "the curse". This was a gradual process, but once adulthood was reached, all those who contracted the disease died quickly after the first signs of the disease began to show. On Edvin's planet, being an adult meant certain death, as none of the adults survived after contracting the disease. At Longyearbyen, the result was a completely silent environment. Homes were deserted, buildings fell into ruin, and the children, left behind in the cold and frozen landscape, were forced to build their own world from scratch. Edvin Nyquist, hardened by the harshness of living in the Arctic, became the de facto leader of the remnants of civilization. Using knowledge acquired throughout his life, he led the children using the power structure he learned during the early years of his childhood, giving himself the moniker "Lord of Svalbard." Through the use of such a title, Edvin attempted to find meaning in this broken world, as he governed with a deep understanding that he too was destined for the same. Once Starfleet arrived on Edvin's destroyed world, they disrupted its prolonged isolation by bringing with them the promise of a brighter future. However, since they could not leave the survivors alone due to the exemptions to the Prime Directive, the Starfleet officers, who arrived there in horror of the tragedy but ready to help, worked very carefully and tenderly to secure the child-led civilizations scattered throughout the planet. It was the first time in the life of Edvin and other surviving Onlies when they came face-to-face with healthy adult beings, free from the threat of falling ill and dying at the touch of mature individuals. Medical personnel quickly set up makeshift clinics for studying the nature of the deadly curse, while other members of Starfleet attempted to earn their confidence as cultural specialists. In Svalbard, however, where Edvin served as "Lord of Svalbard," the methods used by Starfleet officers involved an approach that respected the culture while also building a new system of care for the population. Their main focus was education, as Starfleet decided that the children needed to learn more about science, literacy, ethics, and governance, which would allow them to take responsibility for the development of. In the year 2284, Edvin Nyquist had completed his education under the auspices of the Federation government, something that seemed entirely impossible in the fractured world of his youth years ago. At long last, the curse was broken, and children on the parallel Earth known as Onlie could grow up in peace without facing certain death at a very young age. The former "Lord of Svalbard" had little interest in anything political or administrative; rather, he felt most comfortable exploring the infinite expanses of the universe beyond Earth’s atmosphere. His time spent navigating the dangerous conditions of the Arctic region in his youth gave him the innate ability to orient himself and navigate spaces. This, paired with his flight lessons, helped him hone his skills and gain certifications in atmospheric and low-orbit piloting. It soon became apparent that Edvin had a talent for fast and precise flying, and he soon gained fame through participating in all sorts of races. In doing so, Edvin demonstrated more than mere proficiency in flying, there was an obvious feeling of joy in every one of his races as though he had a newfound. Edvin Nyquist was no stranger to the pilot racing circuit when the Dominion War broke out in the 2370s; having spent decades participating in racing competitions and winning numerous awards, the pilot was known far beyond his home, a planet from which its inhabitants rarely ventured out before the war. While Edvin did not find himself directly involved in the conflict, he followed news about the war and the events connected with it very closely, listening attentively to all the communications coming in, watching all fleet movements and studying every victory and loss suffered. It shook the entire Federation and made Edvin realize very much how fragile civilizations could be… and how badly they could use brave protectors willing to defend humanity against oblivion. However, being a racer at his age, Edvin did not want to abandon his chosen career just yet; on the contrary, he felt obliged to satisfy all the demands of his sponsors and continue showing himself off as the best in what he was doing. Nevertheless, every time a new story came in about a dogfight, a new battle or even some heroics performed by starfighters of Starfleet, something was growing inside him. Edvin spent increasing amounts In 2392, after much deliberation and speculation, Edvin Nyquist decided to hang up his helmet and pursue the life that he had always wanted. Edvin applied to join Starfleet, which accepted him based on his outstanding piloting skills, his ability to lead others developed during his childhood on a parallel Earth, and his resolve evident in all his interviews. Older than other freshmen, he entered the Academy with the vitality of one who has been patiently waiting his whole life for this opportunity. Sent to Earth at Starfleet Academy, he enrolled in the study of Command & Control, a field that combined strategic planning, emergency response, coordination of fleets, and intercultural knowledge required to manage mixed crews. Though his pilot history would have qualified him for helm and tactical positions, he desired to learn more about Starfleet's defense mechanisms than simply operate starships. With academics coupled with physical training and starship simulation drills, he soon gained the respect of his professors and peers. His maturity, his cool demeanor under pressure, and his unexpected humility, traits acquired because of the odd yet brutal childhood he had endured, made him |
